Crib Climbing

So, Friday morning I woke up and walked out to the kitchen, as usual. Occasionally, Carl doesn't latch the front door when he leaves, which was the case that morning. It always freaks me out, because I will have in the back of my mind that someone came into our house and is just waiting for the right moment to attack me. That, or Duke the neighbor dog will come in and track muddy paw prints all over the house, which isn't so much scary as it is infuriating.

Anyhow, I made my coffee, sat down on the couch to watch the Today show for a few minutes before the kids got up, and waited for my coffee to finish so I could gulp some down, also before the kids got up. (I always have a better frame of mind if I have a little caffeine in me before the chaos begins.) As I was sitting there, I thought I heard a doorknob rattle. I turned Matt Lauer down, and listened. Nothing. Matt Lauer goes back up in volume. But wait, there it is again, definitely a doorknob rattling. Then I hear Avery give a blood curdling scream. I was instantly positive that there was a child molester/murder in the house, and went tearing down the hallway to the kids' bedroom, fearful of what I would see on the other side of the door. Preparing myself for the worst, I flung the door open.

There was my son, standing on the floor, grinning at me.

He had learned to climb out of his crib.

We knew this day would come, but hadn't really thought about it much lately because we expected it long ago. I was totally shocked, but totally relieved that no one had massacred my babies in the middle of the night. At naptime, he climbed out twice, but I knew he had because Avery immediately started screaming OPEN! over and over and over. (She wanted him to open the door.) After a little pep-talk about staying in our crib, as well as a spanking threat, he stayed in. Surprisingly, he hasn't escaped since that day, so my fears of a child running around the house in the middle of the night have yet to become reality. Thank goodness - that is one thing I do not want to deal with. At least not yet!

clever little monkey!

I'm glad that I'm not the only one who needs caffeine to deal with the day.

I borrowed this phrase from my mother.

"In the morning, I need either caffeine or an ambulance!"

Yeah, there is nothing that will make your heart stop quicker than discovering your baby has managed to get out that unlocked front door without you knowing it.... Emily was the worst at sneaking off.. she would just be gone in a blink of an eye. I had to watch her like a hawk.
I have the cutest video of her sneaking away. She thought I was taking pictures of Levi and you can see her in the background wondering up the driveway, she keeps looking back to see if I'm watching her.

That must have been so scary!

One night when Erin was about 3, she slept with me and in the middle of the night my sister came and got her to put her in her crib, but didn't tell me. I woke up and was scared to death that she had gotten out of the house or something!
